Child-Friendly Libraries, ICT Labs and Digital Learning – Sarlahi
Youth Foundation Nepal (YFN) has been implementing education-support initiatives in Sarlahi District since 2021, with the aim of improving access to quality learning resources and creating child-friendly, engaging, and inclusive learning environments in rural public schools.
The Sarlahi initiative focuses on establishing child-friendly libraries, ICT labs, e-library facilities, digital educational resources, teacher training, and creative learning approaches. The libraries are designed as welcoming spaces where children can read, explore, imagine, and develop their creativity and confidence. Colorful murals, age-appropriate children's books, comfortable locally crafted furniture, and attractive reading spaces help transform traditional school environments into vibrant learning areas.
The project also emphasizes community participation and local ownership. YFN works closely with schools, local governments, teachers, parents, and community members. Local carpenters and skilled workers are engaged in designing and constructing furniture and library facilities, combining traditional craftsmanship with practical and modern designs. This approach supports local employment while encouraging communities to take ownership of the project.
To date, the project has been completed in two schools in Chandranagar Rural Municipality:
Shree Ram Janta Basic School, Badkurwa-03, Chandranagar Rural Municipality, Sarlahi
Shree Arniko Basic School, Mohanpur-05, Chandranagar Rural Municipality, Sarlahi
In 2026, YFN is planning to establish a Child-Friendly Library at Shree Shankar Singh Chandrawati Sarwajanik School, Garhatol-04, Chandranagar Rural Municipality, Sarlahi, further expanding access to quality reading and learning resources for children.
Teachers from participating schools receive practical training in library management, book organization, reading promotion, ICT lab operation, e-library use, digital educational content, and effective utilization of library resources. Training also incorporates creative methods such as storytelling, theatre, role-play, and activity-based learning to make classroom teaching more engaging.
The Sarlahi initiative is supported by Books for Change, Switzerland, and implemented in collaboration with Chandranagar Rural Municipality, participating schools, teachers, local communities, and other stakeholders. Through this integrated approach, YFN is helping build sustainable learning environments where children can read, explore, create, and learn with confidence.
